What is the significance of Amavasya (new moon) in Vedic Astrology?

In Vedic astrology “Amavasya” (the new moon) signifies a powerful phase of energetic reset, introspection, and ancestral connection. Moon’s energy influences our mind. Our mind tends to focus outwards (pursuits of expansion) as well as inwards (introspections) according to the phases of Moon. The new moon influences us to turn inward, as our emotional and subconscious energies are free from external distractions. A reset to our state of mind naturally occurs during the new moon. The lack of reflected sunlight allows for deep rest, dream reflection, and recovering from past emotional turmoil. It is not a time for bold, outward actions, but rather for quiet contemplation and detachment.

In Vedic astrology “Amavasya” is considered the most sacred day of the lunar month to honor “Pitrus“- our ancestors. Performing charity, prayers, or rituals on this day pays tribute to our ancestors and helps us connect with ourselves through them.
Today, Sunday June 14th 2026, the new moon takes place in Rohini Nakshatra in Aldebaran constellation. This star cluster conveys the ideas of rising, climbing, promotion, growth, development, birth, production, planting, sowing, conveyance. Rohini confers truthfulness, pleasant speech, calmness, strength of mind, stability, responsibility, prominence and purity.
